RFI's Islam and Religious Freedom Action Team explores and supports religious freedom from within the traditions of Islam.
Mehdi was an Atlas Corps Fellow from Tunisia with the Islam and Religious Freedom Action Team in 2018. He brought to RFI not only his native level fluency in Arabic and French to help with the IslamRFI.org website, but also his experience in civil society engagement in Tunisia and humanitarian work in crisis zones with Doctors Without Borders.
Maryam is a rising second-year student at the University of Connecticut School of Law with a strong interest in religious freedom and public policy. She was born and raised in Damascus Syria where she received traditional training in Islamic studies. At U Conn she is the secretary of the Muslim Law Students Association and co-president of the Middle Eastern Law Students Association.
Sofiya is a rising senior at Duke University, where she studies Middle Arabic and Middle Eastern Studies. She is fluent in Russian, and has studied both Jordanian and Moroccan Arabic. At RFI, she spent the summer researching Russian-language materials on Islam and religious freedom, as well as renovating the website.
